Danspace Project has commissioned over 500 works since 1994. This winter we reprise a recent Danspace commission, coinciding with the annual Association of Performing Arts Presenters (APAP).

Another Spell, Vicky Shick’s sixth Danspace Project commission, premiered at Danspace Project in Spring 2016. Wrote Claudia La Rocco in Artforum, Another Spell “showed yet again how skilled this echt downtown choreographer is at placing incongruent moments next to each other and letting them float down the same gossamer stream.”

Situated inside a small village of women, a camaraderie between dancers Jodi Bender, Donna Costello, Lily Gold, Laurel Jenkins, Marilyn Maywald Yahel, Heather Olson, and Shick herself, guides them through their movement—authentic and feigned—as they offer stereotypes, awesome idiosyncrasies, robust exuberance and, at times, the inexplicable. Explained Shick, “My obsessive passion for trying to decipher nuance, detail, intimacy and the quirkiness of the everyday bubbles here. With an abiding commitment to ongoing work, we are recycling some cherished set and costume pieces—scattering and dancing them in a new landscape.”

Food for Thought

Food for Thought is three nights of performance selected by a different guest artist curator each night. Admission is just $5 with 2 cans of food; or $10 with no cans!

Canned goods collected through Food for Thought are donated to St. Mark’s Church in-the-Bowery food distribution programs.

Ruth Patir: I dream of the elections

In my dream last night I hopped on a plane to Tokyo…Hillary Clinton was there. She came up to me and asked me if I wanted to take a picture with her… I had on a silly headwrap that I didn’t think would photograph well, but I said yes anyway. Interdisciplinary artist Ruth Patir’s research into dreams and the political imagination has been ongoing since 2014. Patir’s most recent video work, Sleepers, was shot at Danspace Project in the St. Mark’s Church sanctuary in September 2016 in the midst of a tumultuous election season. The dreams of Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama described in the work were collected by writer Sheila Heti as part of a 2008 project, idreamofhillary.blogspot.ca.

Coinciding with Inauguration Day 2017, Patir will host events in the Danspace Project sanctuary dedicated to healing, sharing, and conversation.

On Thursday, January 19, at 8pm Patir will present a newly edited version of Sleepers and a solo lecture performance.

On Friday, January 20, from 3pm – 9pm, Inauguration Day, Patir will host a day of conversations and readings reflecting on the 2008 and 2016 elections. Patir will invite guest artists to consider the dream as a site of political intervention. All events on this day are free and open to the public.
