Photo by Cyrus Ra For her highly-anticipated return to Danspace Project, Keely Garfield presents a fantastical "dance-cycle." Equal parts dance, drama, and devotional, Limerence, Eva Potranspiration/Cloud 9, and First Attempt (premiere) will be performed together for the first time. Limerence is a dark meditation on the essential human drive to connect with something other than the self; Eva Potranspiration/Cloud 9 blasts off on family, religion, and politics exposing central power struggles; and First Attempt conjures the impending "suicide" of the planet, mounting an all-out effort to save it. Like listening to individual tracks on an album of music, the moods and meanings in the three works accrue to produce a soundtrack of soulful strains, imperative interpretations, and real promise.

Performers include Garfield, Brandin Steffensen, Omagbitse Omagbemi, John Mario-Sevillia, Eric Jackson Bradley, and a featured performance by Garfield's eight year-old daughter Vivian Ra. Jonathan Belcher brings good things to light, Matthew Brookshire sings original songs, found-objects threaten to take over, and of course, there is the requisite rock star appearance by Ms. Garfield channeling David Bowie.

"It takes a choreographic imagination like Ms. Garfield's, both poetic and subversive, to animate a vision as clear as it is mysterious."
The New York Times

First Attempt is made possible, in part, with funds from the 2008-2009 Commissioning Initiative with support from the generous individuals who contribute to Danspace Project's Dans/Creation Fund.
