City/Dans:
Jeremy Nelson's new evening-length work Sail draws its inspiration from the choreographer's New Zealand heritage. The strong English and Scottish influences that exist side by side with the equally influential Maori and Pacific Island cultures in New Zealand resonate throughout the work. Nelson harnesses the dynamic creative force ignited by the interactions, contradictions, and friction that exists among these cultures.
Sail features performance by Francis A. Stansky, Rebecca Serrell, and Omagbitse Omagbemi. Music by David Watson, lighting design by Carol Mullins, and sets and costumes by Luis Lara Malvacías augment the work.
The program will also include Nelson's Mean Piece. The work, which premiered at Dance Theater Workshop in 2006, investigates turbulence and instability. It explores movement that is high-velocity and off-balance, driven by often violent and unpredictable rhythms. Mean Piece is performed by Lawrence Cassella, Jennifer Felton, Meredith McCanse, Omagbitse Omagbemi, Rebecca Serrell, and Francis A. Stansky with music by Pavel Zuštiak,
sets and costumes by Luis Lara Malvacías, and David Tirosh's original lighting design.

the choreography is opulent in texture. Now taut and keen-edged, now lush and fluid
