- The New York Times

Disavowal, inspired by the life of abolitionist and (in)famous "race traitor" John Brown, is a critical examination of white supremacy, racism, alienation and control. The piece probes the relationship between militancy and conviction, asking a question sharply resonant now: What will we give up or push away in order to get closer to/fight for something else? Disavowal is having its New York City premiere at Danspace Project.

Disavowal was created in consultation with, and based on a concept by David Kyuman Kim. Original music composed by Mike Vargas, with a song by Alison Wonderland, and sound design by Jane Shaw . Toupie designed by Henri Ogier Henri Ogier and constructed by Joshua Friedman; the lighting design was by Joe Levasseur and media design by Jacob Pinholster. Costume Design by Liz Prince . Disavowal features performances by Kyle Abraham, David Dorfman, Patrick Ferreri, Renuka Hines, Tania Isaac, Molly Poerstel, Jenna Riegel, Karl Rogers, and Whitney Tucker.

*Please join us for a Post-Performance Discussion on Thursday, May 21st moderated by David Kyuman Kim, Associate Professor of Religious Studies Inaugural Director, Center for the Comparative Study of Race and Ethnicity (CCSRE).

Disavowal is made possible, in part, with funds from the 2008-2009 Danspace Project Commissioning Initiative with support from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Additional support has been provided directly to the artist from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. Choreographic material for Disavowal was developed, in part, during residencies at the Tisch Dance Summer Residency Program at New York University, the Bates Dance Festival, Roger Williams University, Emory University, the University of Iowa, and Connecticut College.
