Murray Spalding has taken pedestrian movement and skillfully crafted vignettes of visual delight. Striking in complexity, though simple in intention, Spalding translates meditation, tribal dances, and yoga into the contemporary dance idiom. Using simple shapes, the dancers carefully weave an intricate web while cultivating heightened energy. Earlier works, III and a reinvented V, use repetition and strict patterns, while later works VII and X build in rhythmic and circular intensity. XII, a world premier, bridges the gap from the ethereal realm into a codified patterned ballet set to Mozart. The program features music by Evren Celimli, costume design by Susan Soetaert, and lighting design by Kathy Kauffmann.
