Danspace Project has been invited by artist and MacArthur Foundation Fellowship recipient, Josiah McElheny, to participate in Madison Square Park Conservancy’s thirty-fourth exhibition, Prismatic Park. Danspace Executive Director & Chief Curator, Judy Hussie-Taylor, has invited four dance artists to “inhabit” the Park to realize new commissions throughout the exhibition. The project features three large sculptures of painted wood and prismatic glass on view in Madison Square Park from June 13, 2017 through October 8, 2017. The resident artists will create ambitious new work that summons the potential for imagination, creativity, and performance inspired by spontaneous audiences and chance encounters.

Rashaun Mitchell + Silas Riener present a public movement practice called Desire Lines, through which they seek to navigate internal landscapes, external architecture, and public desire. During the weeks of June 20-25 and June 27-July 2, thirteen dancers (including: David Rafael Botana, Justin Faircloth, Stanley Gambucci, Jennifer Gonzalez, Eleanor Hullihan, Kate Jewett, Catherine Kirk, Cori Kresge, Rashaun Mitchell, Mina Nishimura, Silas Riener, Maddie Schimmel, André Zachery) will appear in the park, individually and as a group. Costumes will be designed for the occasion by George Venson/voutsa; Painted image by Federico de Francesco.

The practice will culminate on Saturday, July 1 with a marathon day of dancing from 10am-9pm. A free workshop taught by Mitchell + Riener will be open to the public from 10am-1pm on the final day of their residency, Sunday, July 2.
